In this quick video I explain how I fix mistakes in my oil paintings. The best thing about oil paint is the slow drying time. I use that to my advantage which makes it so it’s impossible to mess up a painting.

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting “en plein air” around Los Angeles.

hello! First time viewer, I am in awe of your skills and talent. I was wondering if you do old painting repair, or have tips on how to do it. I have a painting of my mother that has tons of sentimental value (her father was murdered working to pay off the commission for the painting). It is over 30 years old and was not framed. I hung it in my room and some humidity has made it flake and warp slightly. I am so sad that I allowed it to get to this point, but I want to fix it for her, and/or paint my own version in case it is beyond repair. Any help or guidance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Hope you and yours are safe and well.

Question: how do you keep paint from your hands?, ! I have to wear gloves. Guess I'm clumsy

my mistakes are mainly with the skin tone, being too dark. what do you recommend for that? same technique?

What if i finished a certain area 3 years ago during a painting class. I love oil painting, im too much a perfectionist. So i failed the class but have half or mostly finished works. I recently purchased oil paint, lots, I would like to finish. What do you suggest? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanx for sharing, this helped me a little but if there were a answer for my specific issue that would be great. Also, I have Gamblin paint but theyre a little different than the original i started with. Theyre "Gamblin 1980". I hope this doesnt matter.

Im sitting here painting a portrait of a mommy and baby giraffe for my 4 year old that I'm hoping to have done before tomorrow. I've been listening to your video cause I made a huge mistake in the eyes and was actually going to have to redo my entire painting. While the "wipe it away" tip is great for most paintings, I kinda made mine worse and smudged it all to h-e-l-l cause it's a very small painting (just to be clear I'm not in ANY way blaming you or your idea it was totally my fault). Panicked, I grabbed the closest object to me that I thought might remedy my problem… my kneaded eraser I was using while drawing with charcoal earlier. To my complete surprise, it almost erases oil paint better than it does charcoal! What a find! I had to share this immediately and if you love painting and creating art as much as I do, you're probably going to be laughing with joy in a few moments like I was… or whenever you get around to trying it. Anyway, I'm done rambling on your page but good luck! Hope this helps many people! (Note, I love the sanding idea and have actually done it on wood canvas and regular canvas.) 😁
Tip: this idea is best for more detailed areas and great because you can knead the eraser to whatever shape you need as to not mess up more paint in surrounding areas.

I thought I could fix my mistake by letting it to dry and then covering it, BIG MISTAKE! What should I do now? The paint is already dry!

I make brown. And another brown. And now everything is too dark. And now my art teacher told me to make lighter tones. Now I'm frustrated. Kill me.

Sometimes I sand the area to fix, and it doesn't take much, just loosen up or muddle what's there that you don't like, then redraw.

Great tippers, I find the best way to avoid mistakes is to spend as much time as you need drawing out ya subjects with a very light colored, hard wax color pencil – and if you need to, it erases easy.
I spy Rogan back there!
