The Google Nexus Player is yet another set top box that’s not all that different from other set top boxes already out there. Yes it has a Netflix and YouTube app, but not much else at the moment.

The interesting thing is that it’s running Android 5.0 Lollipop, using a new interface designed specifically for televisions. The app selection is very limited at the moment but it is possible to load apps onto the device directly through the Google Play store and then load them up through a small secondary launcher app.

The Nexus Player is limited somewhat by its hardware. It’s running with a quad core Atom processor but only has 1 gigabyte of RAM. This is half the available memory on the Amazon Fire TV. The result is decent video playback but gamers might be disappointed – especially since most newer Android devices have a minimum of two gigs of RAM.

Android 5.0 lollipop has a lot of potential for set top boxes and I think will have a very interesting future ahead of it. But the Nexus Player likely won’t inspire much from the development community given its limitations. I’m eager to see what other hardware manufacturers will come up with and how that might inspire developers to begin working on the platform. .

Lon, I believe Nexus Player is one of the few (if not the only one) Android boxes with Android 7 Nougat. What about an updated review? Also covering stuff like retro gamming?

Hey Lon, which set top box would you recommend for light gaming between the nexus player and the fire tv gaming edition (latest gen)? I know the nexus is kinda dated but i watched great reviews about it. Do you think it's still worth it if i buy one now? thanks!

Detailed review, but I think you overlooked the Music as a selling point.

Mine is due to be delivered tomorrow, and I solely bought it for the music app on tv. Casting music feels unnatural to me, so to have a UI like a jukebox is something I'm looking forward to

So i have a good collection of movies from Google Play Movies, and I am wondering if like phones and tablets…does it download the movies or does it just stream them like a Chromecast?

@***** Have you tried to load the HD HomerunInput plugin for Android TV mentioned here http://www.silicondust.com/about/news/? I am curious to see how the HDHomeRun Prime works with the Android TV. This could be the one solution for the living room.

I love that you talked about emulation in this video as that is a big reason why I would look into a device such as this.
What would you recommend as the best cheap [about 100 bucks] emulation device to hook up to a TV? I always dreamed of N64 on the go but tablets don't support multiple BT connections as of yet [unless I'm mistaken.]
