The kid just has bad parents. The dad probably could afford to not okay for 18 hours a day, but cutting it out of his life completely is just sad, it’s his fucking hobby. If families spent 24/7 with each other they’d all wanna shoot each other

For people who say of video game addiction, "well at least it isn't drugs or alcohol" and that video games are not the problem:

Games are a little bit the problem, because the way they are designed lights up the same neural pathways using the same dopamine and serotonin neurochemicals in exactly the same way as during drug and alcohol addiction. This pathway is lit up in the 'animal' part of our brain,m, and is overwhelming. It does not involve the part of your brain responsible for willpower, which is why addicts and alcoholics and yes, video game addicts, can almost NEVER stop using/drinking or playing video games even when they want to. That animal part of our brain is just too strong. My mom used to say to me, 'If you want to quit drinking so badly, why don't you just not buy the booze and drink?' I couldn't stop because my serotonin, dopamine and endorphins were involved in this viscous cycle that the part of my brain involving willpower had no power over. And once that addiction cycle starts up in your brain, it is incredibly hard to break free, plus it leaves you more susceptible to other future addiction in perhaps a different substance or behaviour.

Drugs will kill you quickly, alcohol takes longer, and video games take longer yet, and while drugs and alcohol are terrible for the health, video game addicts see largely similar poor health issues. Video game addicts have terrible sleep habits and typically very poor diets so they're either going without food like many drug users, or they're consuming insane quantities of sugar like the alcohol that alcoholics consume, and eating quick meals that are incredibly high in sodium, empty carbs with no nutritional value. They are also not getting the 30min to an hour of cardio exercise required to maintain good health, aand that 30min to 1 hr should be activity that gets your heart rate up and keeps it up for the entire 30min/hour. They often have poor hygiene in general and often just won't take care of themselves because cooking healthful food, getting exercise and getting 7+ consecutive hours of sleep at roughly the same time every day & not looking at screens for an hour before bed is all seen as a huge hassle that takes away from their playing time.

They also typically isolate themselves, and while they say they are still talking to their friends online, they still need regular social interaction in person as there are numerous studies about how isolation is unhealthy. This is true for fully grown adults, but is especially true for kids, teens and young adults under 25 because their brains are still developing and social interaction is the most important way kids/young people learn, learning communication skills social skills,, good, dealing with their hormones and other people's hormones, understand their feelings, developing empathy, understanding their friends, their parents, why people do the things they do, how the world is the way it is and why, and learning/figuring out their place in the world and what they want out of their lives. Video games, if played excessively and played more often than young people socialize in real life, can not only disrupt their growth but stunt it altogether, which is exactly what happens for most drug/alcohol addicts, especially young addicts. All these are reasons why video game addiction can be just as serious with equally serious consequences as other forms of addiction.

I'm not trying to demonize video games, but the developers know how our brains respond to these kinds of things just like alcohol and tobacco bigwigs and drug dealers do. Video games are designed to get players interested and hooked, so while it is the responsibility of the parents of children or the young adults who play, developers know what they're doing and that some people will be more susceptible than others to become hopelessly addicted.

The parentes need to be smarter then this. Now i guess its too late. But the parentes have such a negative stigma towards it from The beginning and dosent seem to know video games at all.

I'm addicted to viedo games. Video games are my biggest passions in my life as I love viedo games my whole life. My mom gets annoyed with me when I play video games non stop and all day long. I'm super duper very very very very very very addicted to viedo games as I play games 19-18 hours a day even in three and four in the morning. I play all kinds of video games including mobile games. That's how I love playing video games. I have been trying really hard to limit my video game timing but it's too hard.

For me it's not an addiction, I love the competitiveness of gaming. I one day want to be one of the top ranked players in the world. It's hard to get there but you only get better by playing more, which takes countless hours. It's achieving a goal. We could be doing worse things with our time. Like all things, we need to do things in moderation. Neglecting every other aspect in your life obviously will start cause problems.

Most kids are bored because their parents won't invest time into them, games are forbidden in my house but I take them to the arcade for a family event.

Just want to point out that many of these “wilderness teen programs” torture and abuse kids. Not to say this one did, but these kids often suffer through pure hell and are forced to change their ways through starvation, cold weather, and the need to survive. These are not rehab facilities.

They force the kids to eat and sleep outside, with punishments leaving them without food, water, shelter or warm clothing. Please look up these facilities and the types of ways they force your kids to change, even for the better.
