This week Epic Games announced Fortnite’s newest LTM – Impostors. Sounds a lot like Among Us, doesn’t it? A lot of people certainly think so, including Among Us developers InnerSloth. The nine-person indie studio just seem disappointed, as they would have been completely willing to officially collaborate with Epic Games.

AAA just chase trends, mods and indies are where the innovation is

Even if I hate apple and also epic game store starts to lose money 😑
They need to wake up and start giving credit to the ppl who they ripoff from 🤦

to be fair… what do you expect form a company owned by the pirate country?, China.

you believing at some point that Epic was any good is your misunderstanding.

I agree that game mechanics should not be patentable. HOWEVER, things like map layouts can and should be copyrighted. If Epic "borrowed" thematic and other content from Among Us, they should be sued for copyright infringement. I'm guessing that Epic's betting on both the small size of Inner Sloth and the small attention span of gamers for this to "just blow over" so they can get on with business as usual.

Remember, the whole "Apple/Google versus Epic" fight was calculated and premeditated by Epic long before they made the first move that forced Apple's hand. And this is so they can get a separate "Epic Store" on iOS and Android.

Epic is a Chinese-owned company after all. Their whole nation has been ripping off stuff from the West for the past 50 years and it's worked well for them

Absolutely pathetic behaviour from Epic. Just shows how full of shit all their talk of championing indie games is.

Anybody remember when the big battle royale was pubg and then epic copied it?
This is nothing new

dota, league of legends, star craft, comand and conquer. Copying have existed since forever… as long as your shit es better than their shit everyone wins, except the company with the worst shit.

Let's try this strategy: Rip off your stuff, get you to sue me (I'll keep pushing), drain your life blood through the legal process, attempt to buy you out while I continue to suck you in, offers diminish as we keep going.
Given the game industry i rescind this strategy – it's way too kind. Or insert back-end threats against weaker members of family (pets/primary-school level children).

what the drama? should we blame all the "non-dota" moba games? or all the "non-csGo" shooters? or "non-wow" mmorpgs? AmongUs doesn’t own neither a word "impostor" nor "find impostor"-ish gameplay.

I think that this is just Epic proving that their whole "indie-friendly" attitude is just a mask, they will kick down indies in a second if it benefits them. They aren't the victim, they're just another oppressor.

Dude, don't be so scared of saying what Epic is, man up and just say what we all know. Epic is often offensive, why be worried about offending Epic?

Epic is always sus anyways, what with that Tencent ownership.

I mean… This is not the first time they've done it. Hell the original version of Fortnite was a minecraft clone with its own twist, wasn't it? Then when the battleground genre blew up they made the gamemode for Fortnite into it and made it free, with the original idea thrown onto the backburner and never touched again.

Again, it's a corporation. What did you think would happen? I actually feel like they jumped on this train a bit late, thought they would do it sooner.

Fortnite itself has turned an original idea into basically taking ideas from the other games. Mainly PubG. If PubG hadn't existed, Fortnite wouldnt be on the map.

yeahhhhhh, as someone who has played a lot of Werewolf/Mafia and can understand how Among Us is based on those social deduction games but its own VERY UNIQUE THING, this is unacceptable theft.

Wait you mean the game amung us, which ripped off a board game, got ripped off? THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!!!

Reply
Mac Gaj 21/08/2021 - 08:41

Isn't this like saying every game, but first of its genre, is just a ripoff?

Since Bell's been watching Stargate lately, I think a good comparison is Epic is like the Goa'uld. Everything they own, they've taken from someone else. They are parasites, pure and simple. And they act like they're gods, when they are but greedy little worms.

I am happy to boycott Epic Games based just on this.

Reply
asddasasdful 21/08/2021 - 08:41

They did this before, PUBG -> Fornite. No-one owns a "game mode" and that's a good thing for evolution of video games. Working together with a different games studio to do this properly would be cool, but you rarely see this happen anyway. Most publishers and developers would've done it like this.

Next epic is going to sue the among us devs for copyright theft

Reply
Jussi Mattsen 21/08/2021 - 08:41

Epic is doing what Blizzard has done for years. Stealing ideas and doing them better… well it's Epic, they do the idea worse.
