Today I want to do a full read-through of a design book published by Apple in 2016. It’s titled “Designed by Apple in California” and showcases the company’s history with 450 product photos spanning from 1998 to 2015. It was sold in two sizes, small and large, which carried price tags of $200 and $300. Now that may seem steep for what’s essentially a picture book, but they do feature some premium elements. For example, a custom linen hardcover sourced from a textile company in Germany, and a proprietary type of paper called “Apple-specific Heaven 42.” Plus, the metallic edge coloring gives the book a sophisticated finish that resembles the aluminum of many Apple products. .

you gotta respect apple for the attention-to-detail and the consistent aesthetic they apply to everything they do. there are some things they make that are a bit pretentious, but overall it's pretty inspiring to see a company put so much thought into the usability and feel of their products

Apple makes us pay for the AIR inside of their products. And it's very expensive.

Who designed this book? They could get the formatting on the first few pages correct and you have to have a second pamphlet to read captions on images?

Thats kinda dumb. You need another book to read this book. But hey, at least you got the book with text in the box! If they did it today you would need to buy it separately

It would have been more worth it if it had started with the apple I and went through the Apple II series, Apple III, Apple Lisa, original Macintosh series, and then the contents of this book.

The illusion that Apple products are overpriced can easily be dismissed when you consider that Apple consistently raises the bar for the rest of the industry via their R&D and engineering prowess. There is an expense involved in being the trailblazer. Consider how machines used to look. If not for Apple, we would all still be using beige boxes with cheap plastic parts.

The rest of the industry has a lot to thank for Apple. Even if you never buy an Apple product, you are still reaping the rewards to their willingness to push beyond the standard that the rest of the industry was happy to operate at.

A prime example would be the Apple M1, besting Intel at their own game.

To be honest that's a lot of wasted paper due to the poor book design. If you cannot include suplementary descriptions IN the book, and force reader to use a manual to use the book, You're doing something wrong… All these empty sheets of paper – thats not clean design, that's megalomania resulting in poor user experience of such a basic item.
