This is the only video I could find that went into depth about alkyds specifically, not only what they are but how to blend and layer them. It was very helpful! Thank you

Is it possible to block in with alkyds, and then paint layers on top of that with paint that has linseed oil mixed into it ?

Chris Griffith 02/09/2021 - 14:50

I question what you call "recent", I had experimented with Griffin alkyds back in the late 80's. That's over 30 years before you made this video!

I try not to use japan drier at all, I know that it can make the paint more brittle in the long run. What it does is makes the oil "hotter" and the chemical action accelerates, this can have detrimental effect later in the life of the painting because the drier is still locked in the oil paint, and though it is far slower, the reaction keeps "burning the oil" so to speak, and it can darken the pigments.

I didn't know what Alkyds were. If I'd have known I'd have probably used them. They brought them back to hobby lobby but now they are all on sale probably because they failed to catch on again.

Dont use alkyd on canavas. it gets hard. On panel its ok.
